Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy

After you become pregnant, your body begins to go through a series of changes. As your belly begins to grow, different stresses are put on your spine. The normal curve that is found in your low back increases to accommodate the extra weight being held in the abdominal region. Changes in the way you walk, or your gait, are also noted as your pregnancy progresses, and your center of gravity shifts to accommodate your growing belly. As labour approaches, your body starts to produce a hormone called relaxing. This hormone acts to loosen the ligaments of your body, and is crucial for delivery to take place. Unfortunately, this hormone acts on all ligaments in the body, and can cause an exaggeration in pre-existing spinal problems. All of these changes can lead to pain or discomfort, commonly felt in your low back or pubic region. Additionally, expansion in your lower ribcage and an increase in your breast size can cause pain or discomfort in your midback region. Chiropractic care can help to decrease or eliminate the common complaints that are felt throughout your pregnancy.

Even if you are not suffering from back pain during your pregnancy, chiropractic care is an important part of optimizing your pregnancy for both you and your baby. Your nervous system is the communication pathway from your brain to all parts of your body, and a healthy nervous system is essential for your body to function at its maximum capacity. Chiropractors focus on adjusting spinal misalignments, or subluxations, to not only treat pain, but to ensure that your nervous system, and therefore your entire body, can function optimally.
