How to manage your credit card after Brexit
Due to Brexit, you may need to close your credit card account.
Who is affected
We’re no longer able to provide credit cards for members living in certain EU or European Economic Area (EEA) countries. You can find a list on our website of the countries where, based on our current understanding of their rules, we can no longer provide credit cards.
What you need to do now
If you’re a credit card holder living in an affected country, please review your current financial situation, repay any money you owe, if you can, and make alternative arrangements. If we can no longer keep your account open, we’ll write to you to let you know and include a deadline for action.
If you’re unable to repay your balance by the date in your letter, you can continue repaying your balance in line with your terms and conditions.
Your card will be suspended on the date in your letter, and the account will be closed when it has a zero balance.
Make alternative financial arrangements
From the deadline for action date in your letter, you’ll be unable to use your credit card to pay for goods and services. Your card will be suspended or, if it has zero balance, it will be closed.
If you have any regular payments coming out of the account, please rearrange or cancel them.
Repay your outstanding balance
If you can, repay the amount you owe in full before the account closure deadline in your letter.
If you’re unable to repay the amount in full by this date, you can continue repaying your balance in line with your terms and conditions.
How to repay your balance
If you have a Nationwide current account, you can use the Internet Bank to set up a bill payment from a current account.
If your current account is with another UK provider, you can call the number on the back of your credit card. Using the phone keyboard, you’ll be able to arrange a debit card payment. You can also speak to someone if you need help.
If you don’t have a UK current account and you’re able to visit one of our branches, you can go in and repay the outstanding balance in cash.
Stop using your Nationwide credit card to pay for goods and services
If you’ve been able to repay the balance on your credit card, please don’t use the card to pay for any more goods or services. This will mean your balance remains at zero and we can close your account.
Close your credit card
If you’ve been able to repay your balance, you can call us on +44 2476 438997 or 03456 00 66 11 to ask us to close your account. Lines are open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, and Sundays and bank holidays, 9am to 5pm GMT.
You won’t be able to use your credit card after the date in your letter.
If you still have an outstanding balance, there are options for paying it off after this date.
If your card is in credit, your letter will explain how to get your money back.
Money worries
We understand that repaying the outstanding debt could cause financial difficulties. That’s why we’ll write to you soon to explain what other options you have.
