Going back to our roots
Nationwide may not be the first name on your mind when listing developers. But bringing people together to build better quality homes was the starting point of the Society. And ensuring everyone has a place fit to call home is still our mission today.
That’s why we’re sponsoring a project to test how quality, sustainable, community focussed homes can be built without taking a profit.
Investment in our hometown, Swindon
Working with the Borough Council, we selected a derelict brownfield site in Swindon, our hometown. A site other developers didn’t consider viable to build on. As project sponsors we set ourselves the task of creating a new neighbourhood of 239 homes. A place where younger generations could lay down their roots, families could grow together and older people could stay through later life.
Working hand-in-hand with local communities
We believe Oakfield’s neighbours understand what they need to create a thriving community. Which is why we’ve worked closely with local people – giving everyone the opportunity to make their voice heard. And have a genuine influence throughout our planning and design process.
We continue to support local people by organising community activities to bring them closer together. And we’re working with other organisations and charities to do good in the area. We’re excited to see our new residents at Oakfield integrate into the existing community, as well as make use of the shared spaces at the development together.
Adaptable homes with excellent green credentials
Oakfield is a neighbourhood of quality, sustainable homes that are designed to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A. It is an off-gas development, using air source heat pumps instead of traditional gas boilers. And equipped with electric vehicle charging points.
71 homes (30%) will be available as Affordable Rent and Shared Ownership through our housing association partner GreenSquareAccord.
Awards and Accreditations
We’re extremely proud of everything we’re doing at Oakfield. And the positive impact it will have on both people and the environment. We’re also delighted that other organisations in the industry have recognised our work.
We’ve received multiple awards and accreditations, including:
- Winner of Building with Nature National Award, Landscape Institute Awards 2022
- Winner of Building for Healthy Life Award, Housing Design Awards 2021
- Joint winner for Best Public Engagement and Participation, Brownfield Awards 2020
- Building with Nature Accreditation, 2021
